My daughter, Jenna, was diagnosed with Stage 3B Hodgkin Lymphoma on April 14, 2016. She had just turned 17 on March 7. That was the end of her grade 11 school year; dancing, which she did 4 days a week; and swimming to complete more courses for her life guarding. Chemotherapy became her new activity...
Being away from her friends was difficult, so when two of her dance friends let her know they were volunteering for the LLSC Light the Night Walk, she knew they were thinking about her. It became her goal to walk and fund raise, even if it was going to be just 4 days after her last chemo treatment! With the help of friends, family and teachers, the J-walkers raised over $6000. In just over three weeks. The LLSC staff were awesome dealing with phone calls from myself and Jenna’s teacher trying to get her team registered on such short notice. They even donated a tent for our group, so that Jenna would have somewhere to sit, if she was unable to walk. But walk she did!!
It was very heartwarming to see Jenna with her friends, and feel the love and support of all the participants. We all want the same thing- a Cure!!
Watching my daughter dance with her friends in front the band stage after her first Light the Night Walk was a moment of pure joy for my husband and I. Life was starting back on the road to “normal”, whatever that was going to be…
Volunteering will warm your heart when you see all the patients, survivors, parents, family and friends all supporting each other with love. You won’t regret it!
The J-walkers plan to return again in 2019!!
