I began volunteering with the LLSC Calgary office in December of 2017. Once a week I head into the office and assist with any admin duties that may be required. I am also a member of Team in Training, I will be participating in the Calgary Marathon, 10KM distance.
In November of 2017 my Sister-in-Law Robbyne was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She is a vibrant young mother of four and this has rocked her world. I felt helpless, and needed to do something to make a difference. I reached out to the LLSC Prairies’ Region and began volunteering shortly after. At the same time I signed up for Team in Training and my very first endurance race!
Volunteering with the LLSC has changed my life! Not only have I met some amazing people, who I would call friends, I have learned so much about blood cancers and their impact. Through Team in Training I have been able to fundraise and support the LLSC and their mission. I have reached fitness goals I never thought possible. I have also received such great support from all of those at the Calgary office as has my Sister-in-Law and her family.
I have lived with anxiety and depression for more than a decade now, I find that working in the office once a week has helped me to find a sense of accomplishment. It also helps that the ladies in the Calgary office are always so welcoming, caring and understanding.
I am so grateful for the LLSC, the services that they offer for patients and families and all they are doing to find a cure for blood cancers. I hope to volunteer with the LLSC for a long time to come.
