Blood Tests Blood tests can help explain anemia, hemoglobin levels and blood plasma volume. But it all starts with understanding the difference between red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. |
Bone Marrow and Spleen Bone marrow is the spongy centre of bones. Marrow that produces blood cells is called red marrow, and marrow that doesn't is called yellow marrow. |
Lymphatic System Lymph is fluid that surrounds cells in your tissues – the extra ‘juice’ in the body. When you have a shallow cut or pop a pimple, the clear, watery liquid that oozes out is lymph. |
Leukemia and Lymphoma Leukemias arise in the bone marrow, while lymphomas almost always arise outside of the bone marrow. Unlike leukemias, lymphomas arise from lymphatic tissue, which occurs throughout the body. |
Multiple Myeloma Multiple myeloma is the only type of cancer that develops from plasma cells. Plasma cells normally produce antibodies to combat infection, and plasma cells themselves develop from B-cells, in response to infection. B-cells are a type of lymphocyte in lymph nodes and other lymphatic tissue. |
Myeloproliferative Disorders (MPD) and Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) The difference between MPD and MDS is whether the cells mature normally or abnormally. |
Blood Cancer Research
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada is funding leading edge cancer research through your generous donations. Hear from funded researchers about advances that are being made and information about cancer research in Canada.
Canadian Researcher Advancing Break-Through Therapies in Blood Cancer This video is about less invasive treatments because radiation and chemotherapy, as effective as they have been in saving the lives of countless children from leukemia and other types of cancer, can be harsh on patients and affect them long-term. Dr. Gunning and his team believe that switching off a specific protein in cancer cells will result in its death. |
Targeting Metabolism in CLL Dr Aloyz is Investigator at Lady Davis Institute and Assistant Professor at Department of Oncology, McGill University. Her research are on Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), the most common adult leukemia in the western world. The study of the metabolism of these malignant cells is a relatively unexplored landscape. |
Leukemic Cell Signaling Dr Eppert his researcher at McGill University. His research focuses on the fundamental biology of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) stem cells in pediatric and adult patients. |
Genomic Studies to Identify Mechanisms of Resistance to IMiDs Drugs in Multiple Myeloma Multiple myeloma is cancer of a bone marrow cell known as plasma cells. Plasma cells play an essential role in our immune system. Their transformation results in the derangement in the bone marrow function, weakening of the immune systems and alterations in other organs or systems such as the kidney and bones. Dr. Neri's group has analyzed the genome of myeloma cells collected from patients before and after acquiring resistance to IMiDs and have identified several potential mechanisms to explain their resistance. In this proposal we intend to study these mechanisms with the aim of developing novel therapeutics to overcome them and help improve patients' survival. LLSC gratefully acknowledges Lundbeck, proud supporter of the LLSC, for making this presentation possible. |
Why is the Human Genome so Important for Cancer Research? Dr. Neri, from the University of Calgary, shares how focusing on genome studies allows us to discover more about the biology of the disease, identifying new biomarkers with the final goal to personalize the therapy. LLSC gratefully acknowledges Lundbeck, proud supporter of the LLSC, for making this presentation possible. |
How Targeting Funding Can Make a Real Difference and Bring Medicines to AML Patients Dr. Mayer, Founder, President and Chief Scientific Officer for Celator Pharmaceuticals, describes how LLS & LLSC funding of VYEOS(TM) Phase 3 trials discovered significant survival rates. The goal of this research is to cure AML. |
How Your Donations Help Cancer Research
Why are Donations to Cancer Research at LLSC so important? Dr. Neri, from the University of Calgary explains why support is essential in allowing researchers the tools to enhance patient treatment. LLSC gratefully acknowledges Lundbeck, proud supporter of the LLSC, for making this presentation possible. |
How Donations to the LLSC Help Researchers Find New Treatments Dr. Aaron Schimmer, Hematologist, from the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network, Toronto talks how identifying the gene mutations that cause stem cells to become cancerous. LLSC gratefully acknowledges Lundbeck, proud supporter of the LLSC, for making this presentation possible. |
What are Some of the Ways Donations into Blood Cancer Research are Spent in a Lab? Dr. Weng, Senior Scientist with Terry Fox Lab, explains how donations can help set up lab equipment, including the use of protective gear and the growth of leukemia cells in lab amongst others. These laboratories can range in complexity, safety and costs. Donations to LLSC help scientists do their work in an environment that is conducive to making research breakthroughs. |
Why Does Cancer Research Take so Long to Become Standard Treatment for Patients? Dr. Mayer, Founder, President and Chief Scientific Officer for Celator Pharmaceuticals, takes us through the process by which drugs reach market. The road from drug discovery stage all the way to market includes the following steps: initial development of new drug formulation in lab, followed by a series of lab studies which take years, to presenting to Health Canada for approval for testing in humans (clinical trials). |
What do Cancer Researchers Think is Possible in the Near Future?
The Near Future of Leukemia Research Dr. Aaron Schimmer, Hematologist, from Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network, Toronto, shares the outlook on research which includes greater success at matching individual patients with therapies based on individual genetic mutation and creating tailored therapies for smaller subgroups of patients. LLSC gratefully acknowledges Lundbeck, proud supporter of the LLSC, for making this presentation possible. |
Discovery of New Molecular Mutations Can Help Find New Treatments In this short video clip, Dr. Aaron Schimmer, shares how targeting the mutated gene can minimize or eliminate the cancerous cells. LLSC gratefully acknowledges Lundbeck, proud supporter of the LLSC, for making this presentation possible. |
The Role of Stem Cells in AML Dr Kolja Eppert, PhD, Scientist, Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, shares how leukemia stem cells in acute myeloid leukemia sustain the disease. LLSC gratefully acknowledges Lundbeck, proud supporter of the LLSC, for making this presentation possible. |
How Can a Patient Find out About a Clinical Trail That Might Benefit Them? Dr. David MacDonald, from the Nova Scotia Health Authority encourages patients to always ask their doctor what clinical trials, both current and upcoming, are available, whether you are in treatment or in remission. LLSC gratefully acknowledges Lundbeck, proud supporter of the LLSC, for making this presentation possible. |
