Honoring Edmonton’s local heroes in the fight against childhood Leukemia!
Edmonton, May 4, 2017- The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada is hosting their Journey of Hope event today. The annual event celebrates blood cancer research advances and breakthroughs and recognizes survivors, health care providers and volunteers.
Over 1,500 children are diagnosed with cancer in Canada every year and well over 40% of the diagnoses are Leukemia and Lymphoma. Dr. David Eisenstat, is a pediatric oncologist and researcher at the University of Alberta. An expert in the field, he will shed light on”Childhood Leukemia: Building upon success through clinical trials”. Dr Eisenstat has a long-standing affiliation with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada as both a former research grant recipient and as a member of the LLSC research granting peer review and adjudication panel.
A well-known and much admired Leukemia survivor, Edmonton’s own Mable Tooke AKA, SpiderMable will also be in the spotlight to receive the “LLSC Youth Leadership Award” for her leadership and commitment to help erase childhood cancers. “In her short 9 years, Mable has put a face to Childhood Leukemia. She has exemplified youth leadership not only in Edmonton but across the country. We are proud to recognize her for her contributions as the face of the LLSC School and Youth Program this year,” says Shelagh Tippet-Fagyas, President of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Mable will be signing her very famous SpiderMable posters for the guests.
