Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada celebrates remarkable contributions from UFCW Canada on its annual recognition day
December 4, 2017 – The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) is honouring its longest standing philanthropic partner, UFCW Canada (United Food and Commercial Workers of Canada union) for the significant support the organization and its members have demonstrated over the last three decades in the fight to end blood cancers.
Since 1985, the UFCW Canada family, which consists of over 250,000 members, have raised over $38 million for blood cancer research and patient support services funded by the LLSC. Fundraising efforts include barbeques, bake sales, golf tournaments, and bottle return drives, along with many other community events. Combining all efforts big and small across Canada, the UFCW Canada family remain our largest philanthropic corporate partner.
“Our members are passionate about this cause because they know it makes a difference,” says UFCW Canada President, Paul Meinema. “On a personal level and also as union members devoted to the community, we are uplifted to know that children and adults with leukemia and other blood cancers are living longer, and that many now see a complete remission from a disease which would have been fatal when we first started our fundraising.”
Every first Monday in December, the LLSC celebrates its partnership with UFCW Canada by connecting with as many Local Unions as possible, through visits, emails and phone calls.
“We couldn’t be more grateful for UFCW Canada’s loyalty and support. The money raised has gone into tangible research and treatment advances; between the early 1990s and the mid-2000s, there has been a 50% increase in the five-year survival rate for myeloma and 35% increases for leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.” explains Alicia Talarico, LLSC President. “UFCW Canada’s hard work and perseverance for over 138,000 Canadians affected by blood cancers is truly inspiring and we thank them for making such a tremendous impact in the blood cancer community.”
